About MACHOA

MACHOA was conceived in February of 2004 and formally organized in August 2004 though a collaboration of:

  • The Atlantic Coast Conference Hockey League (ACCHL)
  • Individual teams within the Blue Ridge Hockey Conference (BRHC)
  • Key referees who have officiated ACHA games

The Motivation

It was the ACCHL that first envisioned the need for MACHOA as part of its effort to improve the league. The commissioner and coaches were concerned about the consistency of calls and the caliber of officials working their games.

There was also a desire to 'clean up' ACCHL hockey by strongly enforcing all rules concerning fighting, roughing, and obstruction. The goal is to elevate ACCHL and become a league based on skill, integrity, and discipline.

And MACHOA Organizes

Prominent officials and dedicated coaches worked together for several months to analyze the situation and agree on needs and direction. Ultimately, the referees created a new organization-MACHOA-to improve and manage officiating for the ACCHL.

Key teams from the Blue Ridge Hockey Conference then expressed an interest in joining MACHOA, as did Liberty University, one of the premier teams in the South East.
