BRHC Rules

Teams Roster:

ACHA teams, and thereby, BRHC teams shall be permitted to have the option of dressing a maximum of 18 skaters and 3 goaltenders, or 19 skaters and 2 goaltenders.

Game Scheduling:

Teams may play conference and non-conference teams in non-league games; all games subject to the same BRHC rules and requirements outlined therein.

The home team is responsible for securing referees for the contest. If the home and visiting teams switch venues 2 or more weeks prior to the game, it becomes the new home team's responsibility to secure referees. If the switch occurs less than 2 weeks prior to the scheduled game, the original home team remains responsible for obtaining referees.

If the home team is unable to obtain referees, and cannot demonstrate extenuating circumstances for this failure to the board, the visiting team will be awarded a forfeit.

A minimum of 2 certified officials is required to officiate each game.

Game Procedures:

Official League Score Sheets must be used for each game. Captains must be designated on scoresheet and/or uniform.

At the end of the contest, the home team keeps the original scoresheet with copies given to both the visiting team and the referee.

Games must be a minimum of 60 minutes in length. It is suggested that the following game procedure be followed:
  • 5 minute warm up prior to start of game
  • 20 minute 1st period
  • ICE CUT (optional)
  • 20 minute 2nd period
  • ICE CUT
  • 20 minute 3rd period
Tied games (as per NCAA Section #47). If the score is tied at the end of 3 regulation periods, the following shall take place:
  • A) There shall be a 2 minute intermission
  • The teams shall not change ends
  • B) 5 minute 4-4 OT period shall be played
  • The team that scores 1st wins and the game ends.
If a goal is not scored, the game shall be sent to a 5-man shootout
  • C) No BRHC game may end it a tie. The 5-man shootout is NOT optional.
  • D) If either team declines to play in the necessary period or shootout, the game shall be declared a forfeit on the declining team.

Non-league games that are played in a BRHC-home rink must abide by the League rules. Non-League played at non-BRHC rinks are subject to the home team's rules and procedures. However the League maintains the right to punish any league team, whether through forfeiture, discipline or player suspensions, for any action performed by a BRHC team that are detrimental to the League.

Uniforms:

Teams must wear matching uniforms. Every player must wear identical helmets, jerseys, pants, and socks.

Officials may NOT disqualify a team for failing to meet compliance to matching uniforms, however it should be submitted to the BRHC Commissioner for disciplinary action.

All players must wear an NCAA approved facemask and helmet.

All players must display an ACHA logo helmet and sticker located on the helmet in a position specified by division commissioners.

Game Officials:

The home team must provide and pay for referees and linesmen for each game. There must be at least 1 referee and 2 linesmen or 2 referees available for each game.

The Home Team must provide at least 2 off-ice officials. One will be the official score-keeper while the other one will be the time keeper.

Referees and Linesmen must be certified ACHA, or equivalent Officials. They will use the official NCAA Hockey Rulebook.

Disciplinary Actions:

The BRHC utilizes the NCAA graduated system. The BRHC does not utilize an excessive penalty rule.

For any DQ received during a game, the following suspensions apply:
  • 1 DQ = 1 game suspension
  • 2 DQ = 2 game suspension, etc.

There is no maximum amount of DQ's for any one season. However, officials should immediately notify the BRHC Commissioner of any incident that may be deserving of a supplemental suspension.

A team will forfeit its contest, with confirmation by the Commissioner, for the following reasons:
  • Use of an ineligible player
  • Failure to show for a game that was scheduled
  • A team's inability to pay League dues or submit required paperwork in a timely manner
  • If a referee rules that a game is out of hand due to poor sportsmanship
  • Acts detrimental to the League
